Sometimes we don’t care about how much time we spend on our sketch, we enjoy the process, the moment. But sometimes we just don’t have a lot of time to sketch, we have only 10-15 min or maybe 5. This can happen on our travels so often, because we want to see many places, to be with our significant others, to do shopping and choose gifts. How to make a quick sketch easy and without any stress?
Use Timer
One of the best ways to make quick sketches is to put a timer on 10-15 min. Promise you, it’s enough time to make a sketch. With a timer you can do 3-4 sketches in an hour! It’s a very useful way when you don’t want to spend much time on your sketch. Anyway you can add details or color after, if you feel it wasn’t enough. In that case, don’t forget to take a picture of the place as a reference.
Take small sketchbook
Take a small sketchbook with you if you want to make quick sketches. By saying so I mean A6 sketchbook format. Don’t take A4 or A5 format sketchbooks, because it will take you more time to fill the page or arrange what you actually want to draw and when.
Small kit of materials
Don’t take many materials for your travel, plain air, or walk. It will take time to decide which of them to use. Also it takes space in your bag, could be uncomfortable and maybe heavy. Decide what materials you want to use before the occasion. Take a small kit with you, I always take liner and brush pen as a must have and make decisions about other materials. If you take markers with you, my suggestion is to bring between 6-12 colors, the same with watercolor and pastel. More about my sketching kit you can read here. Color pallet depends on the place you go. Each city or location has it’s own set of colors. Make a research ahead.
Quick sketch on the go
Don’t think too much about making a sketch. When you travel try to make sketches on the go. Good time to sketch for example when you are waiting in line for food or a museum. Also you can sketch your food before you start eating, it will be a very quick sketch. By the way doing such fun sketches on the go leaves you a lot of memories from your trip.
Find main character
Focus on something that catches your eye. It could be anything: building, object, person etc. This would be the main character of your sketch, the more detailed part of your sketch. It means that other parts are less detailed and you spend less time sketching them. Anyway not all the things you see should be drawn in a particular sketch.
Hope it was helpful and will be useful for your sketches. Wish you a quick and successful sketches!
