Usually I sketch with liner and add color to my sketches with watercolor or markers. When I saw that some people use rainbow pencil in their sketches. I classified this pencil like kid’s material, but I was too curious about the effects of this pencil. So I bought it, and share with you my discovery.
One pencil – Six colors
Lead of my pencil has 3 basic colors: red, yellow, blue (warm shade). When you draw it changes color, and blends. So I can also get another 3 colors: green, purple and orange. Rainbow pencil is also mentioned rainbow which is definitely true. Also you can try different rainbow pencils with other colors, so you can take a kit. I have this kit of pencils, but I actually still don’t know what to do with the neon one.
Nice blending
As I mentioned before, the pencil has 3 colors and they blend so nice, that whenever you draw it looks very harmonic. Even if it is not the original color of the subject you draw. And even if these colors are opposite to each other, it doesn’t make your sketch dirty or blends into brown shades. If I feel like I don’t get enough depth and contrast with it, in this case I add marker and fountain pen and they do an excellent job.
Light weight
As you understand, one pencil is very light weight and suitable for small bag. In comparison to markers that take more space and watercolor which both take place and heavier. The only thing you should add except the pencil is a sharpener, that won’t take much space and also light. If my pockets are deep enough for a small sketchbook and pencil I don’t take the bag with me. It is a great solution for sketching near your home or short walk.
Great for outdoor sketching or in travels
Because of all 3 first benefits it is worth it to take the pencil to sketch outside or in your travel. I bought a pencil and sharpener when I visited Boston. I tried it and understood that this is a great tool, and I can sketch everything with it. The other thing I got is that it’s really unnecessary to bring a lot of materials with you. Interesting effects
Random changes of colors while you draw make interesting effects. Also you can’t repeat them in any way, so it always be something new about colors in your sketches. I think it is a great way to release yourself and relax. Sometimes we need uncontrollable processes in our life, and if they are pleasant for us and give us joy this is really incredible.
Of course there’s nothing about high art and such, but you will definitely have fun. And if you don’t, just bring it as a present to your kid.
