Christmas Market in Cologne

Cologne (Köln), a vibrant city on the banks of the Rhine River, seamlessly blends historic charm with modern energy. Cologne is one of these cities that makes you feel comfy from the very first minutes of your journey. It seems inviting you to discover every corner with its cozy atmosphere and easy navigation without a map. Whether you’re visiting for a weekend or an extended stay, here are the best things to do in Cologne.

Combine your trip to Cologne with Frankfurt. Things to do in Frankfurt you can find in my post.

Marvel at Cologne Cathedral

I started my journey at Cologne Cathedral. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Its towering spires and intricate façade are breathtaking, but don’t stop there. Climb the 533 steps to the South Tower for panoramic views of the city and the Rhine River. Inside, admire the stunning stained glass windows and the Shrine of the Three Kings.

Tip: Arrive early to beat the crowds, especially if you’re planning to climb the tower.

Walk Along the Rhine River

The Rhine River Promenade is perfect for a leisurely stroll or bike ride. Lined with cafés and green spaces, this scenic area offers fantastic views of the river and the colorful old town. On sunny days, you can take a river cruise to see Cologne from a unique perspective. Don’t miss to cross The Hohenzollern Bridge, famous for its love locks and take a photo of the Cathedral from the other side.

Explore the city of Cologne during a boat cruise along the Rhine. See the sights on a panoramic tour along the water.

Explore the Old Town

Cologne’s Old Town is a maze of cobblestone streets, charming squares, and colorful houses. Wander through the historic Fischmarkt, enjoy street performances, and pop into one of the many local breweries to try Kölsch, Cologne’s signature beer. I visited Cologne at the end of November and all the Christmas markets were already open. So you can go from one market to another sipping gluhwein (mulled wine) and tasting street food from different cuisines.

Highlight: Visit Groß St. Martin, a Romanesque church with striking architecture and a serene atmosphere.

Join a guided tour through the historic old town of Cologne. Visit many of highlights, including the Cathedral, Hohenzollern Bridge, and the Old Historic Town Hall.

Indulge Your Sweet Tooth at the Chocolate Museum

Located right on the Rhine, the Chocolate Museum (Schokoladenmuseum) is a treat for all ages. Learn about the history of chocolate, watch it being made, and enjoy tastings. The highlight is the chocolate fountain, where you can dip wafers into freshly made liquid chocolate. Actually I didn’t go to the museum due to long lines, but I did not miss the chance to buy a lot of chocolate candies in the museum shop.

Tip: Purchase your tickets in advance online and arrive early to beat the crowds.

Discover Art at Museum Ludwig

Art enthusiasts will love Museum Ludwig, home to one of Europe’s most significant collections of modern and contemporary art. From Picasso and Warhol to thought-provoking temporary exhibitions, there’s something for everyone. What I liked in the museum is that the modern art movements were well explained there. The museum is conveniently located near the cathedral, making it an easy addition to your itinerary.

Shop and Dine in the Belgian Quarter

This trendy neighborhood is the heart of Cologne’s creative scene. It’s packed with unique boutiques, concept stores, and cozy cafés. In the evening, the area comes alive with bars and restaurants offering a mix of local and international cuisine. Try Himmel un Ääd, a traditional Rhineland dish of mashed potatoes, apples, and black pudding.

The Dominican Church of St. Andrew

This church in Cologne is a hidden gem that combines historical significance with architectural beauty. Located near the Cologne Cathedral, this Romanesque church dates back to the 10th century and is known for its stunning blend of Romanesque and Gothic elements. Inside, visitors can admire the beautiful vaulted ceilings, serene atmosphere, and impressive artwork, including medieval frescoes and intricate altarpieces. The stained glass windows there are very unusual and impressive to me.  The church is also the final resting place of Saint Albertus Magnus, a prominent medieval scholar and theologian.

The Basilica of St. Apostles

The Basilica of St. Apostles is one of Cologne’s remarkable Romanesque churches, standing as a testament to the city’s rich medieval heritage. Located in the bustling Neumarkt area, this 11th-century basilica is known for its unique trefoil-shaped design, with three semicircular apses forming a striking architectural feature. Inside, the church exudes a serene atmosphere, with high vaulted ceilings and elegant simplicity. Also there are modern frescoes and blends very beautifully with the interior. When I entered the Basilica I had a chance to hear a choir and it was an amazing experience.

Cologne is a city that captures the heart of every traveler with its rich history, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality. Whether you’re a history buff, foodie, art lover, or just looking for a memorable getaway, Cologne is sure to leave you enchanted.
