Laguna Beach is one of those places where every corner feels like a ready made composition waiting to be captured. I decided to spend a full day walking, observing, and sketching with my small watercolor kit and pen, letting the city guide my creative flow. From ocean views to urban streets, each stop offered a completely different mood and challenge. This kind of trip reminds me how powerful it is to slow down and actually see a place instead of just passing through it. If you ever plan a sketch day, Laguna Beach is the perfect open air studio that keeps inspiring you at every step.
Last summer I also had a sketch trip in Laguna Beach. Find it here.
Watercolor I use in my sketches here.
Divers Cove Beach
My journey started at Divers Cove Beach, where the cliffs, ocean, and soft movement of the waves created a calm and dynamic scene at the same time. I focused on capturing the contrast between the turquoise water and the rugged rocks, while also suggesting the presence of people enjoying the beach. Using a small watercolor kit and a black pen allowed me to stay light and flexible, which is essential when sketching outdoors. The atmosphere here is incredibly inspiring because the light constantly shifts, pushing you to work quickly and trust your first impressions. This first sketch set the tone for the entire day and reminded me how important it is to start with something that energizes you.

Tree and shop
After leaving the beach, I noticed this beautiful tree with a unique shape that instantly demanded attention. Its wide canopy and textured branches created a strong focal point, while the surrounding shop added an urban context that balanced the composition. I enjoyed bringing in small details like cars, people, and street signs to create a sense of movement and life. Using watercolor with pen and a touch of white pen for highlights helped emphasize the structure of the branches and the brightness of the scene. This stop showed me how even a single tree can become a complete story when placed in the right environment.

Forest Ave
Walking along Forest Ave, I found a charming house that perfectly represents the cozy and artistic vibe of Laguna Beach. I decided to build the composition around it, using the stop sign and street elements to create depth and perspective. The urban setting here felt slightly quieter but still full of character, which made it ideal for a quick but expressive sketch. My small watercolor kit and black pen once again proved to be the perfect tools for capturing both structure and atmosphere. This sketch became a great reminder that sometimes the simplest scenes can be the most rewarding to draw.

City Hall
My next stop was City Hall, where the architecture immediately caught my attention. What truly made the scene special was the shadow of the palm tree stretching across the building, creating a natural and dynamic composition. I focused on recreating that interplay of light and shadow, which added depth and emotion to the sketch. The combination of watercolor and pen allowed me to keep the lines loose while still highlighting the structure of the building. This location offered a more calm and grounded moment in the day, giving me time to slow down and really observe the details.

Chelas Mexican Kitchen
I finished my trip at a charming restaurant with vibrant umbrellas that instantly added energy and color to the scene. The bright tones and repeating shapes of the umbrellas created a playful composition that was exciting to capture. I focused on simplifying the structure while emphasizing the warmth and inviting atmosphere of the place. Using watercolor and pen helped me balance loose sketching with pops of color that bring the scene to life. Ending the day here felt perfect, as it combined relaxation with creativity and gave me a final burst of inspiration.

This one day sketch trip in Laguna Beach reminded me how much variety a single location can offer when you take the time to explore it slowly. From ocean cliffs to urban streets and cozy cafes, every stop brought a new perspective and creative challenge. Sketching outdoors is not just about drawing, it is about experiencing the place in a deeper and more meaningful way. If you are looking for a destination that keeps you inspired from morning to evening, Laguna Beach should be at the top of your list. Grab your sketchbook, keep your kit light, and let the city lead your creativity.
