Most of the time we sketch while traveling with family, friends or partners who are not sketching or drawing. If they are, you are a lucky one. In case that your surroundings on the vacation are not sketchers, you should be prepared to avoid misunderstandings and uncomfortable situations.
Tip 1: Tell them you will sketch
Tell your folks that you are going to sketch during your vacation. So they need to be a little patient and sometimes wait or stop at several locations. Maybe you should decide together what they are doing to do at the time you are sketching. Usually it is not a problem, your significant others can take selfies or pictures of you while sketching. And also be your videographer, capturing your sketching process on the camera.
Tip 2: Sketch fast
Try to sketch on the go, making fast sketches, combining both sketching and spending time with your trip partners. For example, make a quick sketch with your pen and add color to your sketch at the hotel later. It will save your time. You probably will enjoy both the sketching process and the company. Tip 3: Take a photo of the places you like and want to draw
Sometimes it is impossible to sketch right now. Or, something goes wrong and you should run. So, just take a photo of the place you would like to sketch. It is also a good practice because you can keep the photos after vacation or use them as a reference whenever you want. But there is a dark side to this tip, it is possible that you will make a photo, but never sketch it.
Emergency tip 4: Separate sketching and your time with companions
This tip is an emergency case, but sometimes it is the only way that both let you sketch and be with your significant others. So you should calculate when you will sketch, when it is perfect and nobody will interrupt you. It could be in the morning while your partner is sleeping or preparing himself, or in the evening you can sketch the window view if you like it.
I usually use tip #2. I am drawing sketches on the go. That makes me double joy of sketching and enjoying the company of my friends. Never tried tip #4 , but I suppose it is possible if you want to. Usually, friends appreciate and respect your hobby so don’t be shy sketching while being together. They could be part of your sketch by the way.
