Reichstag

Berlin gave me the perfect kind of sketch walk: simple, walkable, and full of strong architecture changing from one stop to the next. I followed an easy route from Bode Museum to Brandenburg Gate and turned it into a sketching day filled with domes, facades, street details, and challenging perspectives. What I loved most about this walk was the balance between grand landmarks and small visual moments that suddenly ask to be sketched. This route reminded me that in Berlin, even a short walk can feel rich, inspiring, and completely worth opening the sketchbook for.

More about my German sketch trip you can find here.

A View Near Bode Museum

Near Bode Museum, I noticed a view that immediately made me stop because it had such a strong feeling of contrast and rhythm. The buildings felt calm and still, while the train brought motion across the scene and the river added another quiet layer of movement below. That mix made the composition feel alive without being chaotic, and I really wanted to capture that harmony on paper. It is one of those travel sketch moments when the city almost arranges the scene for you and all you have to do is start sketching.

Bode Museum famous for its sculptures. I had a lot of joy visiting it. Book your ticket in advance here.

Berlin Cathedral

After that, I sketched Berlin Cathedral, one of the most recognizable landmarks on this route.
I tried not to get lost in too many details and instead focused on keeping the building simple while still making it clearly recognizable. That balance is something I always enjoy in urban sketching, because it pushes me to notice the biggest shapes and the features that truly matter. I think this sketch worked well because it keeps the spirit of the cathedral without becoming too heavy or overworked.

Humboldt Forum

At Humboldt Forum, what caught my attention most was not only the building itself but the composition around it. The elegant street lights became a big part of why I wanted to sketch this scene, because they added character and gave the whole view a special rhythm. Sometimes a sketch begins not with the landmark, but with one beautiful detail that pulls the rest of the subject together. That happened here, and it made this stop feel especially satisfying and memorable in my Berlin sketch walk.

Französischer Dom

Französischer Dom gave me one of the most rewarding challenges of the day. I loved the upward angle from the bottom to the top, but this kind of view is usually not easy for me because I tend to straighten angles that should feel more dramatic. This time, I felt that I finally managed to keep that rising perspective and make the building feel taller and more dynamic. It was a very encouraging sketch for me because it showed that stepping outside my usual comfort zone can lead to real progress.

Brandenburg Gate

Brandenburg Gate was my final sketching stop, and it felt like the right place to end the route. I was not fully sure I could draw it well, because the architecture is complex, the perspective needs attention, and the horses on top add another level of challenge. Still, I decided to try, and that made this sketch especially meaningful for me. I am proud that I chose not only easy subjects, but also locations that pushed me to be bolder and trust my eye more.

This Berlin sketch trip showed me how much variety can fit into one simple walking route.
From the moving river near Bode Museum to the strong silhouette of Brandenburg Gate, every stop gave me a different kind of challenge and a different mood to capture. That is exactly why I love sketching while traveling: it turns a city walk into a deeper experience and helps me remember not only what I saw, but how each place felt. If you are planning to sketch in Berlin, this route is a beautiful way to enjoy some of the city’s most inspiring views one page at a time.
