Tampa has a beautiful blend of historic charm and modern attractions, making it an inspiring city for any sketching enthusiast. During my recent sketching trip, I explored a variety of locations, each offering its own unique character and artistic challenges. From the scenic waterfront to architectural wonders, Tampa is filled with creativity waiting to be captured on paper.

Tampa Riverwalk
I started my sketching journey along the Tampa Riverwalk. The view of the Hillsborough River, lined with modern buildings and lush greenery, offered a dynamic setting for sketches. You can capture the reflections of the University of Tampa’s iconic minarets shimmering in the water, as joggers and cyclists passed by, adding life to the scene. I concentrated more on the modem buildings and reflections of the sun on them.
Ybor City
Next day, I headed to Ybor City, the historic heart of Tampa. The cobblestone streets, intricate wrought-iron balconies, and brightly colored murals brought an inspiration to my sketchbook. Sketching the buildings and the lively street scenes here felt like stepping back in time, while still enjoying the bustling spirit of the neighborhood today. In the morning hours Ybor City is very quiet and peaceful and not so crowded. So if you prefer to not sketch in rush hour this timing is perfect.
Henry B. Plant Museum
The Henry B. Plant Museum was a must-visit for its grand Moorish Revival architecture. The towering minarets, arches, and intricate details of the building made for a fascinating architectural sketch. Nestled in the gardens, I spent time capturing this former hotel, which is now a museum full of Tampa’s rich history. It is also the University of Tampa, so you can freely walk inside and see majestic stairs, elevators and amazing windows on the upper floors from the time it was a hotel. The museum takes a small part of it, and I highly recommend you to visit it to have an impression and step back in time.
Tampa Theatre
The Tampa Theatre, with its 1920s Mediterranean Revival design, is a striking subject. Its ornate exterior is adorned with intricate detailing, and stepping inside transported me to another era. The interior was amazing, but I chose to sketch the exterior from a challenging perspective for me. It was interesting to sketch the 3 point perspective for the first time in my travels, usually one point or two is enough for me.
Tampa Museum of Art
Sketching at the Tampa Museum of Art was a captivating experience, especially when I focused on the ancient Greek jar titled Athena Fighting a Hero from 534-540 BCE. The interesting details of the jar’s design, depicting the dynamic scene of Athena in combat, allowed me to explore the fine craftsmanship of ancient Greek pottery. Capturing the jar into my sketchbook made me appreciate the historical significance of the piece, while the museum’s serene atmosphere provided the perfect setting to study and interpret this timeless work of art.
Tampa provided the perfect backdrop for an inspiring sketching adventure, with its mix of historic charm, modern elements, and scenic beauty. Each location had its own story to tell and helped me sharpen my artistic eye. Whether you’re into architecture, urban scenes, or waterfront views, Tampa’s diverse settings are sure to leave you with a sketchbook full of memories.
