Sometimes, the best sketching adventures happen just a few steps from your front door. Sketching near home is a kind of travel too — a way to see the familiar with fresh eyes and appreciate the beauty hidden in everyday corners. I love grabbing my small sketchbook and heading out with just two Pental brush pens — brown and black — to explore and make quick sketches. Around Mission Viejo Lake in California, there are plenty of inspiring spots perfect for quick, rewarding sketch sessions.
Btw, in my recent post I share 5 places you should sketch. You read it here.
Trees near Calle Azorin
Just off the street of Calle Azorin, you’ll find a surprisingly peaceful pocket that feels like a forest retreat. The trees here are full of personality — twisted trunks, dense canopies, and rich textures that are perfect for practice. It’s a fun and forgiving location, ideal for learning how to simplify foliage and explore natural line work. I always leave this spot feeling refreshed and a little more confident in sketching organic shapes. You can find this location on google maps.

Finisterra Apartments near the Lake
One of my favorite scenes is right by the Finisterra Apartments, where you can look out through the trees and capture the shimmering lake, distant houses, and gentle mountains. The view naturally forms a strong, balanced composition, which makes it super beginner-friendly. You don’t need to overthink anything — just block in the big shapes and enjoy the process. The contrast between nature and architecture adds a lot of visual interest. You can find this location on google maps.

Lakeside Park
Lakeside Park is another gem — a place where nature and human design come together in harmony. From here, you can sketch the lake itself, charming houses along the shore, the backdrop of mountains, and the lush trees and plants in the foreground. I once captured a lake view here — it had depth and calm energy all at once. There’s so much to choose from that every visit feels new. Here I used only one pen. You can find this location on google maps.

The Shopping Center on the Lake
Even commercial areas can surprise you with sketchable moments. The shopping center by the lake has a mix of restaurants, shops, and beautiful open views. One day, I focused on the Chase Bank building — the structure had a nice rhythm of lines and shadows. It’s also a great place to warm up with architectural sketches or to sit and people-watch for figure drawing. Plus, coffee is nearby if you need a break! You can find this location on google maps.

Olympiad Rd – Rooftop View
Just a bit past the fire authority station on Olympiad Rd, you’ll find a special spot on the lake side of the road. From here, rooftops cascade down toward the lake, opening up a layered view that’s both scenic and a bit challenging. If you love rooftops or want to stretch your skills, this location delivers. It’s perfect for exploring perspective and playing with the contrast between structured roofs and fluid water below. Here I used one of my pens and added color with pastel neocolor 2. You can find this location on google maps.

Exploring sketch spots around Mission Viejo Lake has reminded me that you don’t need to go far to find inspiration. With a small sketchbook and just two brush pens, a whole world opens up right outside your door. Each location offers a unique vibe — from forest-like calm to architectural challenges. These quick sketches build skills, spark joy, and turn ordinary surroundings into a creative playground. So grab your tools and rediscover your neighborhood — one sketch at a time.
